Medicare Advantage Plans are offered by private insurance companies as an alternative way to get Medicare Part A and Part B benefits. They are also referred to as “Part C” or “MA Plans”. These plans have low monthly premiums and set a limit on what you, the insured, would spend in a given year for out-of-pocket expenses for services covered. Most plans also offer Part D prescription drug coverage. You pay copays for approved hospital and medical services up to the yearly out-of-pocket maximum. With a Medicare Advantage Plan, you must choose medical services and providers within your plan’s network. Some plans may require you to get a referral to see a specialist.
The most common types of Medicare Advantage Plans include organizations such as Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs), Preferred Provider Organizations (PPOs), Private Fee-for-Service (PFFS), and Special Needs Plans (SNPs).
